The 2017 Pie Burner Put To Bed….

The Sunday before the ride, trail conditions were perfect!! Come the Friday before the ride it was 44 degrees and raining!!??

Mother threw a monkey wrench at us; but the ride still went off without a hitch. Saturday mornings temperatures were perfect, mid teens…… with only a high of 28ish.

Studded tires were the buzz word of the day; certain sections of the trail were like a skating rink. Multiple riders went down multiple times; with only one having to pull out after 6ish miles. He’s alright, but bruised up good.

56 riders showed up; and the event got some long overdue local love from the Hibbing Daily Tribune, thanks Mr. Tony Potter!!

With this events growth, look for some changes to come for the 2018 version of the Pie Burner. I’m thinking of having two groups of riders leaving at different times, but arriving back at Palmers within an hour of each other. More on that in the coming months.

When we reached the halfway point, half the riders gladly headed back to Palmers Tavern and waiting for the rest of us to finish up the long route. All the long route riders returned between 3:30 – 4:00 pm.

Eating, drinking and ride giveaways were handled in time; and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

A huge shout-out to my family, again!! You guys rock!!

Also a shout-out to the volunteers, without you this ride would not be what it is!!

And to all the sponsors….. I DO NOT have words for how much your generosity helps this event thrive…. THANK YOU!! Especially Surly Bikes!!

And to Sandy and Brooke; and staff at Palmers Tavern your willingness to work with me and go above and beyond is greatly appreciated!!

Then today I was made of aware of a nice “kudos” write up by fellow fatbiker Sheri Schrock of Cohasset, Mn. In the Hibbing Daily Tribune. Sheri was the nice lady who was pedaling the sweet Otso Voytek on ride day.

Sheri on ride day…..

Thank you for the kind words Sheri, and by those words….. we know what we’re doing, is being done the correct way!!

Here’s a few shots (out of a few 1,000 photos) thanks Zack….. of the day

We’ll see you in 2018!!

Love you guys!!!

Anyway….. the day started off cold, but quickly warmed up.
The one thing I always take away from this ride, is the reawakening of my eyes and senses to the beauty of this area.
I take this area and it’s rugged red rock overlooks for granted, for sure!!
It especially brings a smile to my face when a local rider, with as many years of riding this area as I have, says “Joe, how did you find this or that area??”
To me that makes all the work or route scouting and the miles totally worth it!!

I already have 2016 on my mind, but that will pass. πŸ˜‰
Until mid or late September 2016 comes along, and then I’ll start the planning all over again.
I’m figuring with a minimal amount of time and effort, I’ll be able to add more loops, and eliminate some of the out back portions of the route. Some of the major downs and ups are unavoidable, and make this ride truly unique.

Ti or Carbon Framed FatBike???

I’m looking at new FatBikes, all be it 2 years out, but I’m looking!! πŸ˜‰

I’ll be 50 in two years and what better way to celebrate than a new tricked out high end FatBike!!??!!
It’ll take me that long to save the coin I want to spend anyway!!

I had it narrowed to one…. the Ti bike…. the Carver O’Beast.

Then 9:zero:7 just HAD to release their new 2016 carbon framed line up, and boy howdy are they sharp!!

I’d really like to round out our family with me riding a 9:zero:7.
I’m just so leary of my weight, riding style, riding area and any carbon frame.

Winter mode…..

And 29+ non winter mode….

So my internal dilemma will continue.
I mean, what could possibly come along in the FatBike world in the next two year’s????
Said with as much sarcasm as you think!! πŸ˜‰
Why did I limit myself to these two companies?

Brand loyalty and getting treated beyond right…. goes to the boys at 9:zero:7. Also, the 9:zero:7 has the upright riding position I’m looking for.

Carver?? Well, I chose them because I’m not looking for a race rig, I’m looking for an exploration/adventure rig with as close to the upright riding position of my trusty Pugsley; and Carver does Ti well.
I’m sure other brands do Ti well also, but the geo isn’t to my liking.

I’ve ridden other branded FatBikes, and it seems like the geo was/is geared more towards the racing end of the spectrum…. anyone who knows me knows I’m as far from a racer as it gets!!
