Giants Ridge, Biwabik, Mn.
The day started out awesome, cloudy skies, mid 60’s. It poured the night before, I mean really rained!
So going in, (one knew it’d be a wet sloppy fun day on two wheels) any mud hole that was dry, was guaranteed to be full of water.
I thought there’d be more riders, but it was a good group. With the usaully strong riders one comes to expect.
Also, it’s always nice seeing familiar faces, and adding new ones!!

The fast guys were fast, and then there was me!!! LOL
Never fast, but i’ll go all day!? 😉
Well after the 1st 22 mile loop, (which was my favorite), thanks Erik!!
It was everything the Iron Range has to offer….. fast two track/wheeler trails, not so fast two track/rock laden wheeler trails…. a lake shore traverse (that was simply AWESOME!!!)
I could’ve stopped my day right then and there!
Then it was finished off with some paved shoulder riding and “hero” gravel back to Giants Ridge for a quick pedal (see not quick for me), to the top of the ski hill….. by this time the heat and humidity were kicking in, in a big way!!
Never one to shy away from a challenge I went full on up that damn hill….. hind sight being what it is….. I should’ve skipped that damn climb!! 😉
It was only a 3-4 miles at most, but it totally kicked my ass!!
I pedaled, pushed, pushed, pedaled, sat down in the shade and rested, pushed, pedaled and rested a couple more times before I reached the top. Did I say I should’ve skipped that hill??? The coast down, well, was just that a quick coast down.
After refilling my water….. I was on my
way for the final loop of the cloverleaf shaped course.
Well, it started on the Silver xc ski trail at Giants Ridge (I think) LOL….. did I already say I shouldn’t have tried to pedal/push to the top of the ski hill?? The 1st big hill I came to killed me, and then the next and the next. I knew I was done, but thought ” how bad could it be?” My legs have been toast before, but I’ve suffered on. Well, with the mixture of high 80’s and high humidity to match, and the never ending ski trail hills, hills, hills, hills……
I was demoralized, and thinking I should pull the plug.
I fought the “pulling the plug” feeling for 5-6 miles, but the damn hills, hills I was having to push up, damn John Filander!!!!
John’s name was cursed more than once during those miles!!
In a good way John, trust me!! 😉
It was what it was, and don’t change a thing with the course, well…. maybe a few less hills!!! 😉 😉
Then I got here….. only a short pedal (under 2 miles?) back to Giants Ridge.
I gave myself 15 minutes….. then another 10……. then another 15.. LOL
After that i knew it was time to head back to Giants Ridge, and the family that was cheering me on; and the nice cold beer and burger I knew was waiting for me also.
Ending my ride here was one of the smarter things I’ve done in recent memory while on a ride.
I felt bad about it yes; but how I know i would’ve felt if I continued on…… let’s just say I felt great after my 33 plus miles!! 😉
As usual Giants Ridge and everyone involved put on a great day of riding…. and we’ll be back for sure!!!
