The group loosely stays together until the 15 mile mark.

Studded Tires

A word on #studded-tires.
Over the year’s, this is the question I definitely get asked most.
“Should I mount my studded tires?”
“Are studded tires required?”

Through the 10 year’s of this ride… there was truly only one year they were required…. 2017.
Anyone who was in attendance that particular year will not soon forget!! Ha

I will not answer any studded tire questions sorry, not sorry.
I just have to much going on in preparation for the ride. 🤷‍♂️

I will say… mine will be going on, as usual, a week or so before “the day.”

If you have them mount em up…. If you don’t, I wouldn’t worry to much about it…. You’ll be able to play with your PSI, and you’ll be fine… unless it rains for 2 days before the ride… which I have no control over…. 😜🤷‍♂️

YOU have been warned!! 😉👍🏻💪🏻👊🏻

A word on studded tires
I will not answer any questions about “do I need studded tires?”
I will however reference those question to this information. I just WILL NOT have time to answer everyone individually…. 🤷‍♂️
Mine will be getting mounted halfway through November.

It is better to have your studded tires mounted, and not really need them, than wishing you had put them on before you left!!

If it rains the day or two leading up to ride day (like 2017 😉) I will definitely let everyone know.

Pie Burner 2020

After much back and forth… and with the blessing of the host venues ownership… this ride will go on as planned!!
It will take whatever form it will; with whoever feels comfortable attending.

As years past… we depart Palmer’s as close to 9:00 a.m. as possible.

The route and terrain:
It’s nothing that will shock anyone.
A lot of double track (aka wheeler trails),
Abandoned mining roads.
Goat paths thrown in, just to keep everyone honest. 😜
We head west away from Palmer’s Tavern…. then snake our way back to the east via the “westside dumps” or long abandoned mining stock piles.
We ride on city streets to the old Whitney Tailings pond area east of town.
I removed the infamous “Pie Burner” climb…. it was just to time consuming to have the people who’d rather not climb sit around waiting.. the whole goal is to keep the group moving forward.
There will be some climbing… but nothing that should hurt any rider to bad… 😂😂🤷‍♂️
For those that know me… I hate climbing, but it is very much part of our “game of bike” in general and not just this day…. 💪🏻👊🏻
After the ride through the above mentioned area… we are a short pedal away from the halfway point.
At this point riders who’ve “had enough” follow the Mesabi Trail back to Palmer’s Tavern, while the riders who want to beat themselves up some more make their way to the Redheadmtbpark…. and this year is where the real challenge will begin!!
I’m excited, how about you?? 😂😂👍🏻👊🏻💪🏻

I’ll say this up front…. everyone will be responsible for themselves this year.
I don’t believe I’ll be having any half way point water and or snacks.
If something happens to you, your bike or whatever, be prepared to deal with it on your own.
Thank you for your understanding in this fact… for this year only.

As always…. there will be two distances 15 and 30 miles.
The 15 mile mark is the halfway point and the group separates at this spot.

A word on studded tires!!!
If you have them mount them up before ride day.
I’ll mount mine up mid November or sooner.
My thinking… it’s better to have them, and not truly need them; than need them and not have them!!
Please PLEASE don’t bombard me with the studded tire questions…. More than likely I will not have the time or desire to answer each individual studded tire question; just mount them and enjoy the ride.
In years past it’s been 50/50 plus a coin flip.
Except 2017…. they were most definitely needed in 2017!! 😂😂🤦‍♀️🤷‍♂️👊🏻
Consider this paragraph your answer to the inevitable studs or no studs emails I receive like clockwork.

Same as years past this event is FREE to attend!!
However
also as years past, a donation to the Northeastern St.Louis County Toys for Tots Foundation is your RIDE FEE
The Toys For Tots donation starts at 8:15 a.m. with us departing for the ride as close to 9:00 a.m. as possible.
Donations should be in the form of NEW UNWRAPPED Books/Toys and stocking stuffers; with cash and or check also accepted.. if at all possible with these donations start at $20.

We all know what is expected during this time.
Please wear your face covering when you enter Palmer’s Tavern. Please leave your face covering on while inside.
Until you sit down…
Do your Toys For Tots donation, sign your ride waiver, and find somewhere to sit down; if you’d like… this is the only time your face covering may come off.
Again I believe we all know the drill.

I DO NOT care if you disagree with the whole face covering mandate.. PLEASE PLEASE show respect for the host venue, their staff and your fellow riders.

There will be volunteers to make sure to guide you to each step of Toys for Tots donation, ride waiver signing and getting your shirt.

IF YOU HAVEN’T giving us your name and t-shirt size… ahead of time, you will not receive your shirt until after everyone WHO HAS contacted us with name and shirt size.

The time for giving us your name and shirt size has past. The shirt order has been placed.
70 shirts have been preordered. 58 people either contacted me, or I contacted them.
I even contacted riders I know who are not attending; just to get those certain sizes on the preorder.
Sizing runs from S to 4XL.
If after we hand out the shirts to the people who gave their names and sizes, and you find yourself with the wrong size shirt… that’s just the way it will be.

If you must have the right size shirt… we will start a list. BUT you will have to pay for those shirts yourself.
Shirt pricing is as follows: $20 per shirt.
Plus $5 for us to ship to you upon completion by the printer.
Sizing 2XL and up add $2.50 per shirt.
He does keep the Pie Burner layout open for 7 days after the event.
